Interesting....I am in the process of trying to determine the best tele with enough reach for birding. I don't really want to go the 70-200 route with tele-extender and am leery of bigma....my thinking is with the new 7100 body and this lens.....maybe?

well. that helps explains why the current one is so discounted. I will have to live with the current one, I am sure the price will be around 1800-2100 dollar range.

I wonder if they'll announce a VR version of the 24-70 2.8. Nothing needs an upgrade more than the 80-400 but a VR version of the 24-70 wouldn't be a big surprise either.

I don't know if they ever will. The 24-70 is a monster now, imagine how big it would be if they added VR!!

What's the major downside to the old model?

I understand that screw-driven focusing is an issue. Would it be problematic on a D7000?

I am looking for a nice telephoto lens and am weighing the Nikkor 80-400 against the Sigma 50-500. With a new Nikkor in the pipeline, this could be a good time to get a deal on the outgoing model.

Hm… AF-S NIKKOR 80–400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR: 2600 EUR.
Sigma 300 mm 2.8: 2450 EUR.

f/2.8 vs VR?
Or better yet, get the Sigma 120-300 2.8. The current version is $2800 and the new version to be released this month is $3600. I hear nothing but good things about this lens.
