Options for someday replacing 18-105?

I'm wondering about upgrading (in the future) from the 18-105 kit lens for my D7000 and I'd like some opinions.
18-200; would this be much of a change?
18-300; seems like a long range to keep consistent quality
16-85; and then possibly a longer range lens in the future

Thanks

Find your most used range and get the best quality in that range. I like wide, so when I had a Dx camera, I had the 16-85, it's excellent. I've heard the 18-200 is good also and the 18-300 is a bit lower IQ due to the range.

16-85 then 70-300 is what I have, great equipment for my D7000! I also have 10-24, 35 f/1.8 and 105 macro. It is a big $ outlay but completely worth it in my opinion!

Just a curiousity question, why are you looking to replace rather than add to ??

I'm with Pat. I like the lens a lot and have always been impressed by it. Works great on my D7000. Were I you, I'd add to it on either end. Something like a 10-24mm on one end and a 70-300mm or if needed a Sigma 50-500mm or 150-500mm depending on what kind of reach I needed.

Do you have any fast prime lenses? If not, this is what I would consider first. A nice 50 or 35 1.8 in my opinion would give you more than a longer zoom lens. But, it all depends on what are your subjects of choice… I have a friend that had the 18-200 and he recently got the 18-300 and he claims it's quite a bit sharper and the VR has been improve a lot too.

First, a big thanks to everyone for their input. I hadn't thought about adding to the 18-105 but it's something to consider. I'd like to have no more than two lenses. As for the 16-85, my understanding was that it produced better quality photos than the 18-105. I've even started thinking about somehting like a 70-200 option. I'm not going to be making any lens purchases soon but I want to evaluate my options for when the time comes. Again, I really appreciate the replies. That's why I joined this forum. It looked like a great place to get advice from more experienced photographers.:)

This 18-105 is a fantastic range except the slow lens. When you need to shoot under low light without flash, there is where you wish you got the f2.8.

I have seen switch to the 17-50 f2.8. It provides reasonable wide angle coverage but lack the zoom. Therefore, you may need the 70-200 f2.8 to meet that need. For me, the zoom part is still my faithful 70-300 VR f3.5-5.6. Something I need to work on
