Hi all, just joined today from Kingston, Ontario and look forward to advice from Nikon shooters. I have been using a D50 purchased used about 5 years ago and mostly use the 80-400vr for nature photography. I am looking to buy a 2nd body but keep the D50 as backup and for general shooting with the 50mm F1.8 How does the 80-400vr handheld perform with the D7000. Here is a sample shots with my current setup shot in P mode. 1st one low light , 2nd one good light later in day.

works fine, I have both the 80-400 and the D7000, and as long as bright light, can hand hold even, but a nice package.

That will be a very nice upgrade,, and you waited a long time if you are still using a D50.

Can't speak to that lens, but I'm a huge fan of the Sigma 150-500mm. Most of the bird shots on my Flickr below are with that lens. Great image stabilization - at least 95% of the shots are handheld.

The main lense for birding is the 80-400vr, so its important that the new body does work well with this lense and isn't difficult to focus on say flight shots or moving objects. Is the the D7000, to big of a leap from a used D50. Maybe a different model like the D90 would be better for a learning curve and working with my main lense?
