hi guys got my d3100 at christmas and a loving it. i got the 18-55 kit lens, but now realized i need some more reach and prob a wide angle lens.

i used to do a lot of film photography and had various lenses so this why i've decided on what i need. price is an issue as it is only a hobby.

been looking at the af-s dx 55-300,so any advice on this or even non nikon lens appreciated.

cheers in advance

the main consideration for me is how much lens changing do you want to do and do you want to carry another lens? Personally I would sell the 18-55 and get an 18-200 or 250 ...for wider you need a 10-20 and everyone loves the sigma 10-20
I just stick one lens on each body and thats it. job done.

I have the 18-55 and the 55-300 with my D3100 and love the set up. In and around town I use the 18-55, but out and about walking the dogs, I use the 55-300mm as I'm mainly after wildlife shots. Bear in mind that with the 55-300, you will possibly need a monopod or tripod to reduce camera shake.

hi mate
i was in the same position not so long ago i had the 18-55 but wanted something better i then moved on to a brand new TAMRON AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di at only £129 pounds and i must admit since doing photography its the best money ive ever spent and it covers a fair range with a great zoom it weighs only 458g so not to bad when on the camera :) ive used it alot with motorsport and again its a great lens 18-55 and 70-300 is perfect for a beginner or 55-300 what ever you prefer but then from 300+ its mainly all for specialists and wildlife shots

visit Tamron Europe: Digital lenses for the full information mate :)

hope this help's

Hi mate yes id believe it has a built in a motor as it auto focuses and got a macro swith for close ups between 180-300

Sone of my work can be seen here, the snow album shows more photos taken with the big lens, ill get more posted on there through the week so keep looking now and again

Are the 70-300s any better than 55-300s or? Also if price is a factor, I'd get whichever is more affordable since you'll probably seldom really need that 55-70 range.
