Hark's 2014 Occasional Photos

Unfortunately I don't have as much time to devote to photography as I'd like, but I decided to put all my photos into my own thread rather than to spread them out in various threads. My primary job is a caregiver so everything I do has to fit in around that responsibility.

So...the winter of 2013-14 is one the Northeast US will remember for a time to come. There were extremely high amounts of snowfall as well as numerous storms throughout the winter. That plus cold snaps that lasted for extended times made the Delaware River not only freeze but created an ice jam. Actually we had more than one ice jam this year.

This one is one of my favorites because the ice looks like it froze in the middle of a huge wave. It didn't though. I think the ice forms when the water underneath freezes. That pushes the ice higher and higher above the surface of the river.

Below is another that appears to have frozen during a wave.

And here is a different perspective taken from almost the same vantage point. I squatted down to show how high the ice was pushed up above the water.

Below are a couple of photos taken in Washington's Crossing.

And this next one is north from where the ice jam occurred. The sun broke through some clouds illuminating this tree.

I am SO glad winter is over!

So now that the weather is MUCH nicer, I was glad for the opportunity to get out and enjoy it. Here are some from this past weekend. I REALLY like vibrant color. You might want to put on some sunglasses before viewing them! ;)

I was inspired by wreckdiver1321's recent use of his wide angle lens so I made it a point to take this one with mine at 18mm.

And here are a few more from this past weekend. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! It was perfect! :)

Wheels Keep A Turning Round and Round ♫ by *Hark*, on Flickr

Has anyone ever ridden one of these? It's called an Aquacycle and can be rented for $15 for 30 minutes or $25 per hour. The lake is governed by the county which offers rentals for rowboats, canoes, paddle boats, single or double kayaks, and this aquacycle. It's the first time I've ever seen one. I have no idea who the woman is, but she hooted and hollered once she got underway! :)

Great shots and I still can't believe how much ice you had, makes me glad to be here in TX. The 2 flower shots are beautiful, what lens did you use?

I will be honest and say I can barely stand to look at the ice photos. It was amazing to see in person, but I became so sick of the snow/ice that it was all I could do to repost these photos!

The two flower shots were taken with my Nikon 105mm macro. Last year when I bought the D610, Nikon just happened to offer the body/lens combo for a really good price. Although the lens was one I eventually wanted to buy, it wouldn't have been on my radar without the savings.

The tulips were a pot I bought at the store. I set them on a box in front of the shed. The black background is a piece of poster board taped to the shed. Shhh....don't tell anyone! ;) The bleeding heart photo was taken looking through the viewfinder rather than using Live View although I did manually focus. I am still learning about macro--I love flowers but get squeamish around bugs.

Me neither! I only saw this one but don't know if they had more. The rear wheels spin to propel the machine. It's amazing to see it use tires that are so similar to tractor tires, but those tire treads are like flippers that move the aquacycle. It definitely looked like fun, but since I don't swim, I'd rather stay on land and take photos! :D

Thats funny about about the bugs. I really have enough time lately to use my 105 with baseball going on, it dominates my weekends and energy.

The ice is impressive as all of Mother Nature is, but we all have our limits. Thanks for the name of the flower, bleeding heart, never heard of that before and I won't divulge your secrecy but I will use it.

Nice to see you getting some photos up again.

Thanks! :) I've been swamped with the 800+ photos I took of the drama students, and by the time I get through all of them, there will be one more show to photograph. With Saturday's spectacular weather and gorgeous sky, I HAD to get out. For me, the conditions were ideal! Nice sky and water...my favorite situation! And hopefully since creating my own thread, I will take the initiative to photograph more often. For those who don't know, I am a caregiver so other responsibilities are a priority.

I went out with the intention to use the wide end of my 18-35mm, and I did for the shot of the dock's walkway, but when I saw the aquacycle, I switched lenses. Wish I took more shots at 18mm--it will give me something else to strive for the next time. ;)

I put my sunglasses on and saw the vibrant colors you were talking about. Nice shots....love the spring!
Thanks, Chris! :) Kayaks and ferris wheels are the only two subjects I've ever taken that offer a variety of richly saturated colors. My church has a new playground for the kids, and there are vibrant barricade posts protecting the playground from the cars. I wanted to photograph the posts Saturday, but when I got there, someone was mowing the grass. Lots of dirt and grass clippings were airborne. That's when I decided to go to the park and photograph the lake instead as I recently cleaned my sensor and didn't want to subject it to any debris.

By the way, the water shots are of Lake Luxembourg in Core Creek Park.

Had a couple of unexpected visitors stop by today. Gee...I didn't have anything out of the ordinary to serve them, but they seemed quite happy with what was available! ;) Actually it is rather unusual to find ducks of any kind in backyards although we aren't too far from bodies of water--they show up perhaps once or twice a year.

I present to you Mr. & Mrs. Mallard Duck. Mrs. Duck has something going on with her beak. Not sure if she is injured or if their beaks crack once in a while.

Last night was the opening night of our local fair--the temperature was absolutely fantastic! I expected it would be crowded, but since it wasn't, it was easier for me to take photos using a tripod.

I will be slow in getting the photos edited. This is the back side of the Ferris Wheel. There was ample room for me to work with no one around.

Camera: Nikon D610
Lens: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8
Aperture: f/22
Shutter Speed: 1 second

Nice capture.

Thanks, Jake! :D

Awesome shot! I had a blast at a local carnival recently as well.

This is the only Fair around here with such vibrant colors! Thanks for your comment, Pretzel. :)

Here is one with the most vibrant colors of the night--those colors may be because of the angle at which the photo was taken. And would you believe some teenage boy hollered down, Stop taking my picture!!! As if any one person is going to show up in one of these photos. ;)
