Looking forward to following your adventures ;-)

Thanks Scott. Japan offers a unique and different culture that I would like to share with everyone. I'll have fun in the process of doing so. :)

Looking forward to seeing more of your photos Glenn :)

p.s. bet you doubled the "shutter count" on that D3s

You are a Psychic Sam. ;)

I tried to avoid using that Ch but I couldn't resist it. LOL!

The D800E was completely different animal to use. I heed and used the best practice with the D800E and the results that I got were very good. I used it mostly with my tripod and knowing the larger 36mp file sizes will slowly eat up my hard drive spaces, I became very conservative with my shots.

The D3s on the other hand is more of a renegade. Kinda like "get out of my way" attitude. 12mp, no worries. Easy day.

I just ordered these cards to replace my corrupted Lexar 133x SD cards for my D7000. I don't know if I'll used them now that I have the D3s.

I just ordered one 32gb Lexar 1000x to compliment my other 64gb 400x LEXAR CF card. It should be arriving in 7 days from BH Photo.

It will be nice to see more of your work.

Do you see much quality difference in the photos between the two cameras? If so then what is the difference?

Thanks Don. What I have noticed so far is that at lower ISO levels, the d800 is a bit better. I won't be able to compare until I get the camera. Higher ISO will most like be better on the D3s Above ISO 6400.

Sharing Japanese customs and traditions.

Kadomatsu
: The start of the year is a spiritual time for Japanese, when New Year’s gods are said to descend from the heavens and exist in the earthly realm. In order to guide the gods toward them, many households, businesses and sacred sites put up pine and bamboo decorations known as “kadomatsu,” on either side of entrance ways. The decorations, with multi-tiered bamboo shoots representing heaven, earth and humanity, are believed to attract the gods and draw the lucky spirits toward them. The gods dwell in the pine until Jan 7, after which time the decorations are taken to a shrine to be burnt, releasing the spirits back to their realm.

Since I will be braving the shopping malls tomorrow with my family, I will do my post ahead of time.

Although Japan does not have black Friday during the month of November, their sale is normally held starting New Year's Day and may go on until the 13th of January. Most clothing stores bundle a bunch of clothes together and sell it a reduced price.

My 365 project version will include product evaluation and share some photography tips instead of just sharing a single picture each day. I won't be able to submit a picture everyday but I will try to keep things interesting.

This post will be about the importance of checking the focus accuracy of a prime lens which is my Sigma 85mm f1.4 lens.

I discovered that this lens was back focusing and it was easily corrected after registering it on my camera and added +10. Some cameras do not have this feature so it may not apply to you.

The single focus point was on the second battery on the left.

Been staying in a hotel in Tokyo for the last two days. Most shopping malls do not allow photography inside the stores. Will have to wait tilli return home to transfer the files to
my desktop PC.

Some photos around Tokyo. Since most of the sceneries are buildings, I finally used my Nikon 16-35mm f4 VR lens with my D3s. Still on my honeymoon stage. :D

The lens does have distortion as you can expect from a wide angle zoom lens but it was easily corrected using CS5 photoshop.

On this second image, I used a slower shutter speed in order to get some motion blurr with the cars that were passing by. Unfortunately, they weren't fast enough.

Inside the store, this shot was a "sneak" shot since photography was not allowed.

@ 27mm, 1/100, f5.6, ISO 200, no flash of course.

One doubt, or question: Couldn' you have used an even slower shutter speed, compensating on the aperture? No tripod at the time?

Nice sharp shots Glenn! and I nice quick example of focus fine tuning. I think some folks shy away from that feature which sounds technical, but is really very simple.

Glenn, the Tokyo shots are great... liking that lens too! :) Nice job...

Thanks Pat. I have some other shots too that I took inside the mall using DX mode and FX mode in order to see the difference wideness of a full frame camera compared to a DX camera. I'll post them next day or two.
