Lens Recommendations

I currently have a much older 24-120 that I have been considering replacing with the newer model. That said was wondering if anyone had recommendations for something different before pulling the trigger on this? Was sort of looking for an "all around" sort of lens to go with my 50/f1.8 and 80-200/f2.8.

I wouldn't waste money upgrading a 24-120 for another one. If you're going to "upgrade" upgrade to better quality.

Fred, your link shows the original 24-120mm lens. The OP wants to upgrade to the 24-120mm f/4 VR model. I can't figure out how to compare the new version against the old on that site. Can you add that info, please?

Nikon makes the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G lens that gets good reviews. And a while back Scott Kelby mentioned using the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens as a walkabout lens. But I haven't used either so can't confirm if either is decent.

However, I do have two copies of the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR. Initially I wasn't sure I wanted to go with an f/4 lens (previously had a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8). But it's a great lens that isn't heavy, and I'm very happy with the images it produces.

Might consider Tamron AF 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD

I think it depends on how far you feel you need to reach with your walk around lens. With my Z I have the 14-30 f4, 50 f1.8, 24-70 f2.8 85 f1.8 and a Tamron 70-200 f2.8. The 24-70 f2.8 stays on my camera most of the time. Before the Z I had a D700 and I kept my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 on it most of the time.

I love the focal length. If I go out I will usually take it and one other lens in my bag. It depends on the day. Today it was the 14-30 f4, but it stayed in the bag because 24 was wide enough.

The 24-120mm f/4 was the kit lens that came with my D750. I have no complaints about it. It's compact and has a good focal range. The images it produces have no real flaws that are created by the lens.

But I do not have any experience with the old version. Is it worth upgrading? I have no way to answer that. But I can say the f/4 stands as a decent lens.

My current FX lens selection is Sigma 20mm f/1.4, Nikon 24-120mm f/4, Tamron 90mm f/2.8, Sigma 150-600mm f/5.6-6.3, and recently added a first series Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G VR. The 70-200mm was my way to fill that gap between the 24-120mm and 150-600mm lenses. I like to have overlap in focal coverage and less lens swapping.

Thanks everyone for the input. I decided to go ahead and splurge for my birthday and went Nikons 24-70 f/2.8. I lose a little in coverage between this and the 80-200 but my thoughts on that are to eventually get the 70-200 to replace my old 80-200.
