Rotate the front ring from the A to the "dot" position, then you can manually focus the lens. Also, if your have the right camera (you don't list any cameras in your profile) it should auto focus.

Auto focuses and manual focuses in the 3' to infinity range. Can't get lens past 3' lens "STOP" ....ya know like the infinity "STOP".

I own this same lens, it is a very sharp lens, better than my newer and much more expensive Nikon AF-S 105 f2.8vr .
Are you just going off the pointer scale, have you checked how close it is actually focusing ? Does the end of the lens extend right out when it is focused right in close ? The lens should almost double in length, if it’s not doing this there may be something wrong with the lens.

Thats a shame, because it is a very good lens, no good if you can't focus in close though. Something is wrong with it if the end only comes out that much, it should extend out about 2 inches or a bit more when focusing in real close.

Heres a couple of shots taken with mine. Its good as a normal lens too, but I mainly use mine for macro.

Wow Brad - love that second shot ! I may not have to send this lens back - Got the refund - with no ask for the lens - so I used it in the yard as a normal lens.May get tubes for it … or Japan has it for about $210. Nice shots Larry, its quality glass thats for sure. If you can get it fixed cheaply enough, would be worth the trouble.
I got mine for $100, its rough but still takes good photos, its probably my most used lens out of a dozen others, its a very good lens for product photography too, because it is so sharp.

Heres a couple more shots with it,

^ That is a super sharp lens!
I think it’s one of Nikon’s sharpest. I have been tempted to get the earlier model that doesn’t have AF, they say it’s as good optically, I rarely use AF with mine, I have read where the non-AF one is nicer to manually focus. But this one is doing the job for me, and I already have more lenses than I use.

I like your trained spider ! He does nice poses for you.
I am trying to train him to do tricks as well ;)

OK - I called - to fix = $130. plus parts. - I love this lens - I didn't expect to love it … !
Now you just have to decide, get it fixed or buy another one that already works. So parts must be still available for it I guess.
Looking at your lens in the photo, it is in much better condition than mine on the outside. I dropped mine about 4 foot onto my concrete driveway, it took a bit more paint off and added some scratches, but it still works perfectly. I think it was dropped at least once before I got it too, going by the marks on it. They built them strong back then.

Good stuff Larry, Ive been lusting after a Sigma 70 f2.8 macro, they have a good reputation and I think that focal length would suit what I do, just need to find one at the right price.

I gave my 55 macro a workout this afternoon, I still have to go through the pics and sort out the good ones, but I did get one processed and posted in my 365 thread
