I just picked one of these up darn near new, case, box instructions for my Jurassic era D-700 and have to say for my $198.00 it's a decent lens.
I have read it does not get very close focusing but i beg to differ, if my hand five inches is not close than i don't know what is.
Stopped down it's a good decent lens contrast and colors are fantastic wide open it is off a little on the edges but is far better than my Nikon 24mm f2.8 Ai.
I own the 80-200 f2.8 Pro that's an OK lens not as sharp as the Nikon and like that lens the Manual override clutch on the 17mm is not my piece of pie i just leave it in manual as it will still auto focus, flip the switch on the camera. I bought one of these a couple years ago Ebay buy now $117.00 with the rating chart down to Ugly only a mother could love may have user marks blemishes and imperfections. It was in the ugly but the photos on the auction looked nice and clean.
Received it and it did look super clean but the rear element had a bad coating issue on the lower right corner, it was ok but clearly it wasn't clear, I sent it back. This one is top notch.. If this was intended for film SLR's why say recommended for DSLR cameras on the box?
