Hi, everyone!

I use a Nikon D3100 with kit lens ( 18 - 55 mm) and another 55mm - 200mm lens. I am planning to buy a third lens. I am really confused as to which one to go for. I am considering either the 40 mm micro lens or the 50 mm.....How good is macro with the 40 mm micro?? Can one shoot macro with the 50 mm. Please do recommend. Thanks!

40mm from what i hear is pretty good with micro. That is afterall, its intention. the 50mm is not a micro lens, meaning you cannot focus close enough. I say get the 40 if you want to do macro....50 if you want to do portraits. All depends on what you want to do with it.

Thank you, JoeLewisPhoto for the reply.

I have seen that there are two types of 50 mm lens --- the AF-S and the AF. Price does matter to me. So, I was thinking of buying the AF NIKKOR 50 mm f1.8D as it is quite cheap and I am thinking it will be of use to me for taking portraits, landscapes and all. I have read that this particular lens does not have auto focus in it. Since I use a d3100, do u think it will be of any use if I bought one?

Thank you once again for being the only one to respond.

Do not buy D lenses. They will not work as an auto focus lens with your camera body. The lens choices that will work with your body will be the Nikon 35mm f1.8G, 40mm f2.8G, and 50mm f1.8G. These are much sharper anyway compared to the D version. Good luck.

If you get the right answer from ONE person, what need is there for more people to respond? If Joe had given you the wrong answer, then you would see more responses with the right answer!

Joe gave you the right answer, so there was no need for anyone else to give you the same answer. That's why he was the "only one to respond" :)

Anytime.

Jack is correct. When you get the right answer the first time, people will likely not comment. You asked a question, and it was answered. Ask for everyone's "opinion" if you want a wide variety of answers. Just something to think about for future ref.

I think the best choice for you in ths case (wanting portraits) would be the 50 1.8G. Some will argue the 35 is better. It is a great lens, but I personally prefer the 50. It's only around $219 and has the focus motor in it. I just bought the 1.4 version and it's amazing. I wouldn't rely on using it for lanscapes though as it's not quite wide enough. Remember, there is a 1.5 crop factor on DX cameras....meaning, that 50mm, is actually about 75mm with the D3100.

Umm Jack, did you edit my post strictly to add apostrophe's and Capital letters? LOL.

LOL.........yeah, pretty much, Joe. :) I go around correcting everyone's posts that need spelling and grammatical corrections. :) It's just a habit.........nothing personal to anyone. I even do it when I'm reading the newspaper or magazines. :)
