Lens for Landscape photography

there is no question that the lens you should be using is the nikkor 14-24mm. It is the best wide angle ever made by any lens maker.

What kind of landscape photography do you see yourself doing? If it is low light or night, you'll want a faster lens. If it is day/bright light, the decision goes from fast to lowest distortion because you'll probably be using a tripod and smaller aperture to get more depth of field.

Most scenic photography is done with wide angle. Typically 10mm to 24mm. Even prime lenses in this range are expensive. You might try some of the used equipment dealers or referbs. They will be cheaper and usually just as good as a new one. If you go that route find what guarantee they give and their return policy.

One of the issues with really wide glass is the tendency to "fisheye". I love using the 18 end of my 18-200 or even my 50 mm and stitching photos together, just another option. for the wider effect.

I use the 18-105mm Nikkor for all my scenic work. It does a good job. Not as good as the Nikkor 10-24mm but not as expensive. The diagonal angle of view of the 10-24mm is 109 to 61 degrees. At 109 degrees (10mm) there is very little distortion if any. Nikon did a great job in the design of this lens directing it's use at the scenic photographers market and is not as expensive as the 14-24mm.
