Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G vs Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D

Looking at buying a 50mm prime for those occasions I really need the low light capabilities. I shoot with a D750 so either lens should work just fine. Would the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D be just as good a choice for me especially since it is $100 cheaper?

Are there other brands/models in the same price range as either of these 2 lens that are better choices?

I can't speak for the G lens since all I have is the older D model. But I'm 100% happy with it. Some people say the G has better bokeh... so... how much is better bokeh worth to you? The other thing is that the D has an aperture ring that could be very valuable if you ever want to get a reversed mount adapter.

I have both, and even at the pixel level I cannot tell the difference.

Another option, if autofocus is not required, is the Nikon Series E 50/1.8. Cheaper than the AF-D, and 95% just as good optically.

I also noticed that it had the old DOF chart on the lens barrel. I really miss that on the new lenses. I used to use hyperfocal distance all the time in the old film days.

I have the af-d for sale here on Nikonites, and the only reason I am willing to sell it, is because I bought the AF-S f1.4 version. Both are great and I can't say how much better my af-d f1.4 version is to be honest, but I'm guessing it is some better.lol :)

The af-d 50mm f1.8 is a great lens for a cheap price, and one of my favorite lenses that I have used. I can't say how good the AF-S 50mm f1.8 G lens is, as I never tried one.

I had a 1.8D lens before, bought it off from ebay for bout 80 bucks mint.
Pictures were sharp and produced good color, but the only down side is the built quality.
I personally prefer D lens over the newer ones, because they were produce back in the 90s the film camera era without the techology of the built in AA filter or whatsoever in the DSLR, so the quality of the lens are higher.

I'm very happy with the AF-D 50mm. Picked it up for about $100 CDN ($80 US). Love it.

The only thing is that had I bought the AF-S version I could have used it on my D5100 as well as my D610.

If (err when) I upgrade my "Normal" lens I'm looking for a 1.4mm - maybe a Siggy Artsy one or maybe someone will bring out a 1.4 with V.C. (Tamron just did with their 85mm 1.8 I believe).

A good nifty 50 is a staple to have in you kit.
