I am planning on using it for street and travel. I want something good for landscape and street photos. What do you suggest.

Well, for many years, the "normal" lens for full frame was always considered to be 50 mm. Normal meaning about the same view the eye thinks it remembers seeing. Of course, sometimes we think we want wide angle or telephoto, which then might favor a zoom lens. :)

24, 35, 50 and 85 mm are the most useful primes with the FX format. Depending on how YOU use the camera, any one of them could become your best loved lens. That being said, the 50 is the cheapest one so it doesn't count, just get it.
Then depending on how close to people you like to get, the 35 or 24 would be my choices. For portraits, the 85 is the one.

Why the Sigma?
Because they're fantastic. Read the reviews for yourself, there are plenty of them. Most of them sound something like this one:

In fact Sigma's latest 50mm is one of the very best lenses we've ever tested. It's impressively sharp wide open, with none of the 'haze' or 'glow' from spherical aberration that's normally associated with this kind of fast prime. Stopped down, it just gets better...

I've just bought a Nikkor 24 - 70mm f2.8 and it's a lovely lens...great for a "walking around" lens - it's a bit heavy but the results are well worth lugging it around, my other favourite lens is my 85mm f 1.4D....lovely for portraiture work, plus a while back I bought myself a 50mm f1.2 ('cause I always wanted one).... but if you want just one for "travel" (depending how much gear you are willing to lug around) I'd go for a short zoom such as the 24 - 70 ... Sigma...Tamron...Nikkor.... check 'em out and see what suits you... good luck.
cheers

you can use a prime but zooms are also good and very flexible as @oldsalt man said. not everything has to be shot at f1.4-2. personally, for 24-50, id use primes then above that, the 70-200 2.8 can handle anything else. yu can do some nice sniping with a 70-200 and be inconspicuous. great compression as well from the background.

if I had to choose, my favorite would be 24/85 if I was going primes. that cn handle the bulk of wide-tele

One thing one must not forget though. @MFGD750 is asking for a travel lens. As much as Sigma 35 and 50 1.4 Art lenses are concerned, they are heavier and bigger (read less conspicuous) than the Nikons 1.8. I've weighted all my lenses and my lightest one is the Nikon 50mm 1.8 D. For me, while traveling, this lens is a must. OK, it doesn't have as nice a bokeh as the 1.4, but it focuses fast and is sharper than any zoom that I know of. I'll never let go of this lens. And the best thing is that it's probably way less expensive than the Sigma Art, leaving me with some money to travel with.

I too would shoot for 20 or 24 whatever aperture. Most money-conscientious choice. If it was D800/810 I'd aim for top-resolution glass because it will show.

I have the D750 and the 50mm f1.8 is ideal for it but I've just bought the new Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 and it's never off it now.

I use my 28mm the most, but it depends on how wide of shots you like. A wider lens like this or a 35mm allows you to include more in your shot than say a 50mm. But 50mm also gives you just a bit more reach, is a bit more compact and great bang for your buck.

Edit: Just realized how old this thread is. Oops.

Oops, nothing. It is still a good discussion. My only question is why stop at one prime?

Ziess Distagon 35mm f/2 and Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 are tiny lens that are really, really, nice. No one will ever accuse you of taking "flat" pictures with these. Check out the flickr pages for them. Oh and they are quite cheap on ebay.

There is a 28mm f/2.8 Voigtlander as well.
