AF-S 300mm F/2.8 VR II - What is this for?

In the box along with the lens and bag is this pad. It's wooden based and padded on the top.

At first I thought it was some sort of extra padding to change the bag layout, but it's too big.

It makes a great base to stand the lens on top of, so is this what it's supposed to be for?

Does it fit at the bottom of your bag? It looks like a bottom protection so your lens doesn't get damaged when putting the bag down.

That's what I thought, but there is already one in the bottom of the bag and I think this is slightly larger.

I googled it and found this comment somewhere:

The hard black thing you pulled out after the manual is the case for the meniscus glass that sits on the front of the lens, should you ever need to take it off.

Is it a pouch or could it be a substitute for a beanbag

I did some more searching and it seems to be a mystery item.

The best thing I read about it was this comment of one user:

Hello Dudley G,I called Nikon today and they had no clue what the piece is for...!

I've just had another look at the bottom of the bag and removed the pad that's in there. It's the same apart from it's a couple of mm thinner than the spare one. I'm guessing it's for putting in the bag when using it for a lens that is slightly smaller in length.

I looked up the specs for the bag and it's compatible with 5 different lenses.

I've managed to get a couple of shots and it's awesome. I'm going to need a few practice sessions to get used to it, but so far, I'm impressed. Here's a photo I got of a Blue Tit in a nearby nature reserve.
