35mm 1.8G seems soft, anything I can do to fix it?

Hi, I have a Nikon D7000. I have the kit zoom 18-140 variable f, a 35 1.8 G, and a 50mm 1.8 G. Some informal family portraits I took outside seemed soft, but I mistakenly shot them at 3.5 I believe. So tonight I did some test shots in house of my wife using WL Ultra strobes at 1/160th F=8 on manual. Even at F8 they weren't tack sharp, so I shot the kit lens at 35mm F8 and it was tack sharp, especially around her eyes. I then shot the 50mm at F8 and as expected it was sharp.

So I thought, maybe the 35mm isn't stopping down. But a quick test at 1.8-f11 showed it definitely is. The glass is very clean, as is the body. I did, unfortunately buy it used, so no warranty.

Any ideas why 1 lens would be softer than the others, even at F8 where just about anything should be sharp? Are there any in camera fixes I can do for this? Thanks, Daver

If you are using AF, take a photo at f/1.8 of an object that you can clearly see the DOF like a window screen at an angle or a ruler (tape measure). You can see if it is focusing near or far of where it thinks it is focusing.
