Hi my friends! For those that have had experience with both the 85mm f/1.8D and 85mm f/1.8G is the G worth the extra cash ? I will be getting the D610 body and I do love the 50mm f/1.8G on the D5100 , so now out to you !

Surprising the article mentions the G focus speed being 30% slower than the D.

I'm a sucker for D lenses, and although my AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D is obviously a different lens than the ones being discussed here, I find that my D hunts a bit more than my AF-S 18-200mm DX lens. Never really been a problem though. Scott have you found this to be the case with your 85mm f/1.8D?

I love the D lenses ability to allow manual aperture adjustment - sort of a fallback to years ago to shooting manual film cameras.

My 85mm f/1.4D doesn't hunt and is instantaneous.

Hmmm now $800 is looking good ! ::what::

With all these user opinions given, it's funny how most people revert back to the cheaper option once you start factoring the price.

Greg - I think you will be happy with the 85mm f1.8G unless you have a "Need" or requirement to get the f1.4 lens. I'm sure once you start comparing the prices. I have sold all of my Nikon "D" lenses since I prefer the newer optical formula.

I also have the 85mm1.8G and it is a beautiful lens and imho a good value, bought mine from Amazon.
