Which Macro FROM THESE TWO.

I'm a big fan of Nikon macros. But to me being able to back off from the subject would out weight any sharpness difference. I use my 105mm macro more than my 60... 40.. You'd be sticking the flower in the lens... Not as bad if your using a small sensor.

I would go the Tamron 90mm, its the one I have. Check out my Flickr, but be aware that the recent ones are taken with Raynox DCR-250 aswell.

Scott- Your Flickr page is just FILLED with amazing photos!!!! They all look great.

As far as macro lenses I would never give up my Nikon 105mm f2.8 I love it! But between the two choices given I would have to pick the Tamron just because of the extra reach. Good luck deciding!

Great Shots Mate. Thanks.
It is mainly Insects, flys ect that I want to photo.

I am a Complete beginner in all this so have a lot to learn.

Thanks Kevin

Then you really need a long lens... 90mm or greater, unless they are dead. Sticking a big DSLR in their face is gonna spook them.

With the choices your considering, I agree with getting the 90mm! The longer lens is a real plus for sure! I haven't tried the Sigma you have, so I can't say, though Sigma does have some good lenses! :D

I have both lenses and would suggest you go with the Tamron for that added distance it gives you. The 40mm can be tough to sneak up on a insects to shoot them when you're darn near bumping into them.

dude some kick ass work. you, unlike many photographers go and shoot. many are all about the gear but dont ever go out to shoot.

OP, since you said these 2, then its the tamron. I would ask you to take a look at the 105 AFD thats about $350 mint used and dont leave out the tokina 100 which is one sharp MF lens.
I personally dont think ken rockwell can review photography as his work sucks ass, but technical stuff he knows his stuff. and I hate that he begs for money from people and drives a mercedes and does pretty well. but you should at least read the review for the tokina
Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro Review

before I bought my 105VR I invested a huge amount of energy to see what was out there and read tons of reviews on them. imo, the tokina is superior to them all, including the 105VR, I shot it and at 2.8 its just sharp and focus is fast and bokeh is wonderful, but not as good as the 105VR and I needed the VR so got a used mint VR with warranty for a nice price. dont ignore the tokina. its built like a tank, has fast AF, will give you better working space, very sharp and amazing bokeh. if you have or plan to get an 85mm some time then the tamron at 90 is not the smarter choice. but you decide what you will. your money. good luck whatever you choose.
