Help: Keep Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G and buy Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8G Micro...?

I'm interested in other's opinion regarding my dilemma.

I have the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens which I love...great low light, fast focus and great bokeh.
It's currently my favorite lens.
I've come across the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro lens on sale on Craigslist and made me thinking...should I buy it and replace my AF-S 35mm f/1.8G?
I can buy it for $160 in mint condition...everything included as new.

Would this be a wise choice?
How does both of these lenses compare...I've googled and researched, but just can't find an answer so I'm asking here.

What would "you" do in my situation?

Thanks for the advice.

Isn't the 35mm and the 40mm very similar?
Would the 35mm wide open (f/1.8) be that much faster/better compared to the 40mm wide opened @ f/2.8?
Is it actually beneficial to own both?

Trying to keep my head straight and determine what to do...I also have the 50mm f1.8D too.

Hmmm.....that gives you 3 lenses within a 15mm spread. On DX the 50 does good for a portrait. The 35 and 40 are super similar with the 40 having more tricks in its bag. If you MUST get rid of one then sell the 35. But I really hate the idea of selling glass.

I feel the same way about selling any of my glass, but felt it was necessary to sell my AF-S 18-55mm VR & AF-S 55-200mm VR.
Reason was that I have the AF-S 18-105mm & AF-S 70-300mm VR II to replace them.

Also for portraits I have the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G :p

So, so confused! :torn:

Then to be honest I would dump the 35 AND 50. I mean 40mm and 50mm is what....a few steps back or forwards?

I just got the 4 month new 50mm f/1.8D used...paid $90 which included a Tiffen filter.
Scrapped the Tiffen and replaced with the Nikon NC :)
Still under the 5 year warranty!

Not worth getting rid of...just yet. ;)

Not so quick my friend... There is also the full stop difference between 2.8 and 1.8... In some circumstances this could be important and make the difference between a sharp picture and a blurred one.

true. But I was going with what was mention between the 35 and 40 where the full stop didn't seem to matter.

I still wouldn't get rid of any because while the difference isn't that great in focal length....ditching your widest prime on a DX that you could use in tighter places and just might get you the shot doesn't appeal to me.

They'll bury me with the 35mm f1.8. Resale value of the 35 is so low It wouldn't be worth it to sell. YMMV.

I can't comment on the 40mm or 60mm macro lenses. Those two lenses seem too short for my taste.

I went with the venerable Nikon 105mm f2.8 AF-D.
I like to be farther back when I'm taking pictures of things that sting.

OP, What's wrong with the Sigma macro in your lens farm?
