Which camera body? What mode are you using? Auto or manual focus? We need more info to help.

I have a D90 and there is a dot on the bottom left side of the viewfinder that indicates the auto focus, it blinks while it's focusing and stops when the subject is in focus.

When the dot blinks, it usually indicates a low light situation, which in turn tells the camera that one of the settings is not conducive to taking the shot. Either the Shutter speed or the Aperture setting has to change, or even the ISO. P means it's pre-programed with certain paramaters. These P settings can be user changed. At least on the D200 they can.

Warrior, the blinking dot is the focus indicator. When blinking the camera is not in focus. In the auto focus mode the camera will not take a picture as long as the camera is not in focus and the dot is blinking. It will take a picture in manual focus mode even if the camera is not in focus and the dot is blinking. This focus indicator is very handy in manual focus, it indicates when the subject is in focus.

Yes....what Joseph said, too. I failed to mention that part, as I assumed you had read the owners manual, where it explains the function of the dot. What I think we have done is just explain it in plainer terms.........something which the manuals usually do not. :) Anyway.....now you know. :) Happy clicking.
