Set Default function no longer in Lightroom

I posted in another thread about how I thought a bunch of shots I'd taken with a remote trigger looked dark. They did, and I'm still working that problem, but when I imported a bunch of photos from my D500 yesterday I noticed that all the defaults I apply on import (camera profile -> Camera Neutral, Sharpening Mask -> 80, apply lens profile correction and remove chromatic aberration) weren't applied. I was getting Adobe Color as the profile (which darkened it further) and all other settings were defaulted.

I applied everything and then discarded and started rebuilding 1:1 previews on over 900 images (yay!!) and then started looking for the Develop -> Set Default option. I don't always update to latest versions of Lightroom as I use it predominantly for cataloging only, but I did update it this week, and guess what?

It's not there anymore!!!!

After over 20 minutes of going out of my mind looking for it I start googling, and every hit I'm getting tells me it's there. Finally I go to the Adobe site and start hitting their help topics and I see something from April 2020 that leads me to something from November of 2018 that talks about Import Settings and how they've changed how they're applying default settings on import.

I go back and check stuff I imported last week and everything is as it should be, so even if they changed the interface the default settings I had specified years ago were still being applied. But not after this latest install.

I'm on Lr 9.2.1. Has anyone else out there who uses Lightroom with a set of import defaults noticed that they're no longer there? Was there a message about this from Adobe that I missed? What a PITA.

Yes...They changed that whole feature set with 9.2... when they added to ability to add defaults to multiple camera serial numbers... There were a few blog reviews that talked about it earlier this year... Now you can have multiple default settings depending on whether you want to create Imports from specific cameras, or presets, or camera profiles...

Fred, although I don't use LR much and never used the cataloging option (and never set any presets), are you saying it is still an option to create presets? I'm trying to understand this. Eventually when I switch to an iMac, I will want to set it myself if possible.

I did notice that my imports from the D810 always turned out darker than the nef and the jpegs SOOC... I've been trying to change settings to get what I should be getting when importing but haven't been able to do so yet. Maybe I'll get it by accident one of these days...

Yes... You can create your own presets... and you can have LR apply that preset to images as they're Imported...

It's also extremely easy select a group/all/as many files as you want, and sync those images to a modified image... which is usually the method I use...

I prefer LR NOT apply any mods to RAW images as I import them... I then make 1 or 2 adjustments, either manually with sliders or by applying a preset and then sync that adjusted image with the others in that same set...

Yes I know Fred, but it was weird to see my "properly exposed" images all go about 1/2 stop darker when LR imported them. But it might have bee the Adobe color management that did this. I've since then applied my "camera standard" settings to my imports from the D810 automatically applied and it's better. But I don't understand why this only happened with my D810 files. The D7200 and all Fujis were OK... Food for thoughts.

It used to be easy. it applies the Adobe Color preset by default, which is much more contrasty and saturated than even the Nikon Standard profile. For wildlife I actually prefer Camera Neutral.

You've always been able to do it by serial number. I have 6 bodies each of which had a serial number specific default setting. They've always had the ability to apply develop settings on import. What they have here is not "multiple defaults", they just made managing it a pain in the ass. Particularly when all you want to do is set profile, sharpening and tick lens profile boxes. I see they have the option now for Camera Profile, so perhaps Lr can now use the Nikon profile from the EXIF? That would solve Marcel's issue.
