Gimp, Darktable, and startrail plugin

Hi,

I am a newbie to Nikon camera photography and this forum. I just wonder if anyone here has used Gimp, Dartable, and Startrail plugin (gimp-startrail-compositor) for your post-processing job. I would like to hear your comments and reviews on these software and plus a dumb question (more to come later): how do you install the startrail plugin to Gimp and how to activate it?

Thank you and Happy Holiday to you all!

I have used Gimp in the past, but not with the Startrail plug in. Gimp can do some awesome things, but it takes some work and a good learning curve.

Gimp only here, as well.

Since the plug-in appears to be a python app, you should be able to copy the file to the following directory:

C/Program Files/GIMP 2.0/lib/gimp/2.0/python

Darktable here with an occasional use of Gimp. No startrail plugin.

Running both on Linux.

Hi Walt, Thanks for the heads up and I agree with you for the difficulty of learning and using Gimp.

Hi Sparky, Thanks for the install tip. I use Mac and just found the way to install and activate the startrail plugin.

Hi Needa, How was your experience using Darktable? How do you compare it with Lightroom? Tks

Can't give you a comparison, never used Lightroom. Darktable is a powerful editor and there are quite a few videos on its usage. I have tried some other editors including RawTherapee, just stuck with Darktable. If you do a search you can find comparisons between LR and Darktable.

I've been using Gimp for a while now. Love it--it's a powerful image processor and the latest versions have a lot of tools that used to be found only in Darktable, etc. I never found the learning curve to be all that steep, especially now since there are so many excellent tutorials on YouTube (Davies media Design has some excellent tutorials ans doe Parker Photographic).
