....i know i could spend an hour searching the forum for the answer, but apparently i am not up for it. sorry. i am an american with a D3400 that i bought 6 months ago and i am 9 days into a 12 day UK vacation. i have taken a bazillion pictures. alot are fine for "family album" purposes, but there are some i might like doing some processing on and see if i can make them better. i am not a professional photographer and am never going to be one, so i don't need "commercial" software, nor do i need something insanely complicated or in the cloud. what do you recommend?

If you don't have your disks handy, here are links to View NX-i (simpler utility) and Capture NX-D (full featured raw editor). As FredKingston said, maybe take a test drive?

I am glad to take a look at that....i don't think my camera came with disks and i know that the camera itself has software but the camera screen is too small for me to work on it and i work best on a laptop, not a camera with a screen attached by a HDMI.

The disks the camera came with is not for the camera. It and the links provided to you are to be installed on a computer/laptop... NOT the camera.

Editing is done on the laptop or computer. There is also a menu of editing options to do in-camera. Nobody I know ever does editing in the camera.

Gimp is an excellent free image processor. It can process both jpegs and RAW (through a simple plug-in or with free Lightroom-type programs like Darktable). There is a bit of a learning curve, but not too difficult for basic applications--as you go one you can learn advanced techniques. Darktable and Lightzone are excellent more advanced editors (similar to Lightroom), also free.

You can worry about processing once you get back home. Just make sure you are shooting raw files and copy the images every day on another disk or buy other memory cards. DO NOT start deleting pictures on the card while in the camera, it can lead to major problems DAMHIK. Photoshop Element is probably as good of a software that you'll need. Just make sure the software you get can process D3400 NEF raw files. Safe trip and return.
