Monochrome Camera Profiles in PCC

I'm curious if anyone has compared the new monochrome camera profiles that are available in Camera Raw and possibly compared them to the Nik Collection's Silver Efex Pro? Since I haven't played around with B&W conversions, I have no clue how these might compare. There is definitely noticeable differences between the 4 monochrome filters.

Photographers use colored filters like those when shooting Black and White film since many colors have similar tonal values when converted to Black and White; red and green, for but one example, are virtually indistinguishable.

A blessedly to-the-point article article on this topic can be found here: How Color Filters Affect B&W Photos (via PetaPixel).

All that being said, there's a lot more to good Black and White than desaturating the image and boosting the contrast. This is where NIK tends to shine.

Thanks for the article. I used to shoot B&W and might still have a red filter somewhere. Since I never used Silver Efex Pro, I didn't know if it offers the same type of color filter choices (allowing the user to choose the color filter they desire).

But I do like how this is set up which allows us to view an image as though it was taken with B&W film and a colored filter.

On another note, I took a class where we developed our own B&W film and used a darkroom for printing. We were also able to use color negatives for printing because there were filters to use in the darkroom that converted the color negatives to B&W prints.

Thanks again. :)
