Have i gone too far with this

Have made some changes to our expenses at home,Nancy is being made redundant this Friday and has 20 months to go before she gets any pension, i have made some drastic cut backs to keep her at home and CC has gone along with cable TV and other things.
So i am on Elements as i never used Light Room or 90% of photoshop.Elements has brushes for sharpening and exposure plus other things but they are not as refined as CC,sitting here looking at this first i think i have gone too far then i think not.

Apart from normal exposures tweaks i have sharpened the heron darkend and softened the background with extra on the fence at the top left to lose it a bit more.

Your opinions would be welcomed

I tell you my honest opinion. It looks great, the eye is spot on. I like how it is separate from the background, and the reflection is showing the movement of the water.

@mikew. I would have brought the highlights down some (the legs and the bird's belly seem a bit blown), then increased whites some to give it a bit more pop. (I'm saying this without knowing what the original image looked like)
All in all, pretty good job though.

Thanks Pete, all taken onboard my main concern was the sharpening as its a bit clumsy to use in Elements after CC.

Would you mind if I posted an edited version? Nothing major, really, just some possible tweaking to consider.

No problem i always think its a better way to do it.
Well it's all personal opinion but here's what I did.

  • Curves Adjustment to up the contrast a bit.
  • Burned the bird's legs, chest and neck a tiny little bit.
  • Burned the edges of the frame, sort of a vignette really, to make yer bird stand out a little better.
  • Removed some of the extraneous feathers in the water and on the ground. I felt all those bright white fleck scattered throughout the frame were distracting. Your opinions may vary...

Thanks i would have used curves as it was my favourite tool in CC but i don't seem to have it in Elements, looking at yours does it mean mine looks a bit dark on your monitor as on mine yours looks lighter.

The edits you did look good to me. I like the way the subjects pops, and it doesn't appear oversharpened if that was the concern.

Looks good to me, Mike. As a very recent retiree, I understand the money concerns!

Thanks, until Nancy gets her pension its a third of our income gone if she doesnt work,i really dont want her to go to work any more.

We may have had some good news, got a letter yesterday from a solicitor about the estate of one of my aunts who died in 2010,not a lot of money even if i get it but it would be nice.Half of her money was left to my father who is no longer with us so it is to be shared between his siblings, thats the bit ime not sure of my sister isnt actualy my sister she was my fathers stepdaughter not adopted.
The solicitor cant find her so i have written to him with details of who she is and where she lives (we dont speak any more) so it depends on if it only goes to blood line and adopted children.
