I probably know the answer but have forgotten due to age.

Ime shooting the D500 in 14 bit raw and getting files in the 40-50mb area,on transferring to ACR i get 8 0r 16 (i can choose) bit files arouind 20mb,is there some way i can keep the full file integrity in ACR.

When you open a file in ARC, there is in the bottom a link to adjust your import sizes and color profile settings:
link file size.jpg

Then this windows open and you can check or uncheck the resize box.

Hope this helped.

Thanks @Marcel,I had looked at that but couldnt find a way of importing the file as is, so are your saying i have to decide on a file size and i couldnt find 14 bit, should i work with 16 bit as below and what does the 20.7mb meen is that what my 40mb is being reduced to.

I see on your screen capture that you have it set to 8 bits/channel... This might be where you lessened your size... maybe?

Since the "Resize to fit" box isn't checked, this would mean your file size should stay original. Maybe you could try setting up your camera for 16 bits/channel to see if your import size changes much. Trial and error can end up being productive sometimes.

I think i could have been a bit thick,i think i have understood correctly now that the line at the bottom is nothing to do with the file as you are working with it in ACR, its your export settings to photoshop and i can export in 8 or 16 bit at 20.7mb,so i guess if my file from the camera is a 14 bit 40mb file thats what ime working on untill i export.

The Workflow Options menu determines how ACR opens your .NEF files. That menu also specifies the color profile working space (since raw files don't have color to begin with ACR assigns them the color profile of your choosing). You also use this menu to choose to open your raw files in either 8-bit or 16-bit mode by default, 16-bit being the far better option in my opinion, but there is no option to open your raw files in 14-bit. Your D500 is a 24MP camera so your raw files should be opening in ACR at roughly 6000 x 4000 pixels with file-size averaging around 25-30MB.

I wonder what Mode you're processing in when in Photoshop, though... Open a raw in ACR, export to Photoshop and then go to Image/Mode and see if you're processing in PS using 16-bit mode there as well, as I think you should be. Your choice of course.

Thanks, just done the check and its running 16 bit in photoshop, part of my confusion was because view nx said my file was 41.4 mb but ACR was showing 20.7 but if we are talking export size and export bit it makes sense to me.
