ACR problem

I have a feeling its something i have done but cant track down what.

I sometimes brush NR onto background areas,i have the mask box ticked to show me the coverage and normally just get a complete pale grey blanket over the area i brush,
the last few days its been like painting on a surface that has greasy patches,the mask just glazes over certain areas,i think its the patches that show less noise but i want it back how it was.

Any ideas why
