Lightroom's New Dehaze Tool.

I have been playing around with the new dehaze tool in the latest update of Lightroom CC. It seems to be a pretty nice tool for environmental haze. I haven't tried any really hazy or foggy applications. Here is one example of before and after. The only processing was +40 dehaze. Both shots have the same amount of sharpening.

LR is always quick for me and my computer is 5 years old. AMD Phenom x6 and 16gb of RAM and it still shreds through all of my photos.

As someone who loves shooting landscapes in notoriously hazey Southern California (I swear, it's a curse) I rejoiced when I saw this feature was coming to LR/PS.

Now that it's here, I'm rejoicing all over again. It's just as good as what was promised.

I don't use LR because it's a foreign language, but it looks like I will have to learn a couple words of this foreign language because that dehaze is pretty impressive.

FWIW, the previous version can do about the same thing. Quite a bit of Clarity and Vibrance (about +75 each) pretty well matches the original sample posted. Too much will similarly increase the streaking in the sky.

While the second version, with the increased Clarity and Vibrance, shows a definite improvement I strongly prefer the shot cleaned up with the Dehaze Filter. I see significant differences in the blueness of the sky/gradient, the mountains have better contrast and the shadow rendering of the shaded are in the center of the frame looks better to me by quite a bit.

Can't argue with preferences. :) And it is possible that the very casually mentioned +75 settings might not be optimum for every case. Still the point is that those without the newest software version should not despair. Any version is a very powerful tool, with many capabilities. Two ways to skin cats. :)
