questions about a fitness/gym photoshoot

I am doing a photoshoot for a fitness instructor at a gym and am looking for a few pointers
I plan on using the 70-200(2.8) instead of the 24-70, does that make sense? I would like to be able to isolate the subject better, most likely using length between 80-120 depending on the amount of space. As far as lighting I only have a hotshoe flash and a wireless controller, I also have a home made reflector for the flash to soften the light(link).

The idea is to play around with heights and have the flash at about 45 degrees to the subject, can I buy some inexpensive additions that will allow me to get better light.

I would like to get shots close to this(good case)

I'm no expert, so take my comments into consideration with that, but I want to get into shooting these types of images too. I guess my concern with using the 70-200 is do you have enough room? I would think with you need a lot of space with 70 being the shortest. They gym I go to, I think the best bet will be to use a 24-70 as that will get me closer and wide enough to capture the subject.

Is it possible to get in prior (2 or 3 days) and do tests?

edit: Thanks for the link to the flash reflector. Those pictures in the link have inspired me to step up to the flash game.

Assuming an FX body, that would be my go-to lens.
