I finally got around to a shoot with that 135mm f/3.5 AI Nikkor I got for $75

It is sharp as a tack and light as a feather. I can feel a big difference between it and those hefty 105mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/14 AIS Nikkor

I like the way it renders an image, very nice. So you were shooting at f/16? Is that a sweet spot for it?

Is that what the EXIF says, I never look at that crap. I almost NEVER change the manual lens settings on the D700 when I change lenses, all of which are manual AI and AIS. I have never even entered the date into it. It is really not important to me to honest about it. I was around f/8, a little more than 2 stops down, which is usually best for most lenses.

I got this lens for around 70$. ALL aperture values are sweetest spots here:p - razor sharp whenever you want it to be sharp, and the bokeh is superb...

I set non-CPU lenses, which you can do on the D700 as well, so that I see the aperture in the viewfinder and in the control panel. Also, later in Lightroom, I can use that information to apply distortion and vignetting compensation, which usually turns out looking pretty good (tried that with the 24mm f2.8 AI-S). Granted, with a 135mm you don't need to worry about that and if you are shooting manual then you'll see the aperture on the lens and will be just changing shutter speed.

for me, a test for a lens is one stop down from maximum open and check that. all lenses are sharp stopped down to f/16. I prefer to shoot portraits pretty open. why does exif say 85mm?

Normally the sweet spot is between f/8 and f/11 ... Nice pic thou..:)

See my post to Crycocon. I was actually at f/8. I almost never set manual lens data in the camera. EXIF data is actually pretty useless info to me to be perfectly honest.

Folks for the LAST FREAKING TIME, I ALMOST NEVER set manual settings into my D700. I find EXIF data to be basically of no value to me. That is why it says 85mm at f/16. I may have set it to that a year ago. EXIF may be important to you but I cannot be bothered with it.

Don' get so wrapped around the axle on irrelevant stuff. I sure don't. My D700 is nothing more to me than a digital F2S that is used in manual 99.9% of the time. I don't even know what most of the buttons and menu items do because I will never use them and could care less. Kindly just look at the image and rate it for what it is; a very well executed high key portrait of a very attractive woman. Comment on the IMAGE if you would like and stop worrying about EXIF crap ok?

Not sure I understand your comment about the Bokeh .

I assume you were referring to the lens and not the actual pic.

Well now you are aware of where I am coming from. You must be new here because people who know me already know this. I got tired of having to repeat myself. I am OLD SCHOOL photography and all of this automation crap is about as useful to me as gloves are to someone who has no hands. People nowadays get so wrapped around the axle over the technical stuff. How many people do you think ever asked Ansel Adams what aperture and focal length he used on "Moonrise"? He would have probably looked at them like "who gives a damn?"

Yep im new, only 2 weeks here. you think I care youre old school. dont assume people know. poor baby had to repeat himself. is there a reason to snap over exif?
I dont care what u use and what you like. I was commenting on what the first post said. if you mentioned it in your post, I wouldnt ask. is is mandatory, I read every comment before asking a question, no.

if youre old school and know that you dont like the technical stuff and have been here for a while, post a "BTW the exif info is wrong, dont pay attention to it" note at the bottom of your post. ansel adams is dead. move on. you seem to be stuck in the past and I dont care about ansel adams even though I have two of his books and hardly read them. not my thing.

I don't care if you care or not. I am not here to please you. And until you actually post some of your images as far as I know you are a "talking" photographer instead of a "shooting" photographer.

Nice shot, and a good deal on a great older lens. I have a manual 105mm f2.5 that cost $75, and the glass is great. For FX, there are some old great lenses out there to be had for cheap if you have the time to manually focus and adjust other settings.
