Hello,

I took the forums advice and went with Topaz Denoise and I really like it. Now I'm looking at Sharpen, does anyone have experience with this and if so how well does it work?

Thanks,
Jon

No info to help you, but what kind of specs does your computer have for RAM and processing power? I've heard Sharpen can take a bit of time to render so that info might be helpful for those who are knowledgeable.

Topaz is in process of beta testing a new AI version. The performance of the earlier versions has been improved, ALOT!!!

That is good news. I opted not to get Sharpen AI because I know it would require more than my computer can handle. It will be interesting to see how much Topaz will address the performance aspect of it. Thanks, Fred.

I can't say too much because I beta testing it for them... but Topaz basically pulled their AI engine from the earlier versions because of performance issues... they then fixed the AI engine, and are now adding it back to their products. I don't know what the timeline is... but by the time it gets to this stage of beta, it's close to done... It's a lot faster than the earlier versions... in single image mode... I don't do multiple images at the same time... and I use a Late-2012 Mac Mini with 16G ram...

I am trying the trial version now and it seems to put leas strain on my system than the denoise. If they are doing beta testing is now a bad time to buy or will the new software just update when released?

Thanks guys, one more question. Is it advisable to use DeNoise and Sharpen on the same image?

I'm no expert on the matter, but have never had an occasion to need to use both Sharpen and Denoise on the same image.

I have both because I purchased Sharpen before I purchased Denoise and later took someone's advice to get Denoise. For the most part, I now use Denoise about 90% of the time and Sharpen 10%. If I had only Denoise, I'm sure that I could get along just fine.

edit: In the past two days, I've encountered two files that Denoise's performance didn't satisfy me, so I turned to Sharpen and got results that did. So I take back my last comment in the original part of this post.

I use DeNoise AI on almost every issue. I tend not to go to Sharpen AI unless I have an image that is a little soft but too good otherwise not to use and Sharpen AI will almost always be able to pull it back from the dead. Glad to hear that it's being improved speed-wise, it's the primary reason I don't go to it often.

And once again for anyone reading this, if you're looking to buy any Topaz product you can get an additional 15% off any price (including sale prices) if you get there through my referral link.

One bit of advice about using any third party editing software, especially so for Sharpen, is to crop and save your photo before editing it. Depending upon the details and size of the crop of the image, doing so can significantly reduce the processing load and times. However, cropping would be the only editing I'd accomplish before third party application editing.
