To make a long story short.....I gave a friend an 18-55 lens...I replaced it with an AF-P 18-55mm lens. This lens will work on my 7100 but not on my D90. I didn't know that when I bought it. Anyway, I still need to replace the lens and found this on ebay. It IS an AF-S 18-55mm which will work on both of my cameras but what is the gizmo on the front of this lens?

Maybe some sort of reverse mount macro thing?
Thanks

You probably need to post a link to the ebay listing to see the original pics. The one's you posted don't show anything other than what might be the lens cap, as mentioned.

Well, you all seem pretty sure about it just being a lens cap, and therefor normal. I'm not sure why it looks so odd to me. Thanks for all your replies.

I too think it looks like a lens cap. It might have a scuff mark on it - hard to tell in these pics.

Thats the OG 18-55 and the thing out front is the focus ring with the lens cap on it. There is an 18-55 af-s VR2 that looks more normal on the front and has slightly better optics/vibration reduction. The 3rd generation is the af-p you mentioned doesnt work on earlier cameras.

If you notice the zoom ring position it's not at 18mm, so what you're seeing is the lens slightly extended in the zoom range. On the front of that is a lens cap.
