HELP! 50MM stuck on Manual focus!!!

I just recently purchased a Nikkor AF 50 mm lense (1.8f) for my D3200. I'm still very new to photography, so I started with the 1.8f. Anyway, I am unable to change to auto focus mode on my camera as the "M" is gray and can't be changed. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I can manually focus, but can not get to the option to change to AF on my camera, if that makes sense. Please advise. Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

Do you by any chance have the 50 mm D lens? If so, it will NOT autofocus on the D3200 since this camera does not have the screw drive for autofocus.

The lens on the right is an example of a AF-D that Brent mentioned. The left is an AF-S which will auto focus on the d3200. The AF-S contains a focus motor which is require for the 3200 to auto focus.

As was already mentioned, the D3x00 and D5x00 series bodies won't autofocus with AF-D lenses since those lenses don't have AF motors built into them. The D7x00 series bodies and more expensive Nikon bodies will focus with AF-D lenses.

I have the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-D lens which is quite good, but what I don't care for is how to attach an optional hood. Nikon makes a hood that screws into the front filter rather than attaches on the outside of the lens.

My first DSLR was a used D3000, and I had to get a longer zoom for it. I bought an AF NIKKOR and thought that it would auto focus. You know, auto focus camera, auto focus lens? It didn't, so I had to manually focus, which I figured would be an awesome learning tool for me! I forgot quite often, oh well! Anyways, I think I have some of the lens thing down. If it says "AF NIKKOR" and not AF-S or AF-P, it will only auto focus with certain bodies. Pretty much, all of the D3000 and D5000 series will not auto focus with it, also throw in the D40 and the D60 in with the pile. Here is a chart from Nikon that will hopefully help as well! Hopefully my inserting a link works, lol.

Yeah, it's a pain to figure out compatibility at times. I can totally sympathize. For a "fun" exercise you can try to figure out which Nikon teleconverters work with which lenses. It makes me head for the aspirin bottle. :)
