Looking to upgrade

I am looking to move up in the camera world. Deciding between D750 and D810. When reading descriptions, and with that said most are copy and paste Nikon descriptions, they all say import model. My question, does this matter any more? I've emailed this question to several sellers, Abe's, B&H, and Adorama but seems no one has the time to answer me back.

Thanks for the time and info.

Do you mean country of manufacture, or whether the camera is from Nikon USA or imported as a grey market product? As far as I know, all D750s and D810s are made in the same factory, so that is a non-issue. Grey market cameras will have no warranty in the USA, and will not be serviced by Nikon USA, either. I hope I am understanding your question. :)

Simply put, "Import Model" means Grey Market.

If you don't know what Grey Market camera gear is all about, see this article: What is Grey Market Camera Gear?

As the article points out there is nothing wrong with buying Grey Market. It's not illegal and a Grey Market camera came from the exact same factory as the non-Grey Market version; the only difference is what happens to them once they leave the factory. There's no doubt you can save a LOT of money by buying Grey' but it comes with certain risks you need to be aware of. I've bought Grey' a few times and have had nothing but positive experiences but... I was also in a position to accept the risks that came with that decision.

I know what gray market is and means. That's what I'm trying to avoid. Looking to purchase from a Nikon authorized dealer but every ad I look at from said dealers has the same import/import for warranty. I was under the assumption authorized dealers sold USA models but apparently not as it seems all the adds are the same.
Also when buying from a dealer how do you know what serial number you will get till it's at your door. Around here there are no photo shops within 75 or more miles that I or my photo club can find so most everyone shops on line.

Your first tip is going to be "Price"... If it's significantly below the MSRP, it's probably Grey... You're just searching the low ball price folks... Go to Adorama or B&H Photo

I just talked to a Julia at Nikon Customer service. She said "they can not tell if it's gray market or not until it's sent into the service department. The serial numbers do not tell them any country of origin any more." So I ask, "What about the price difference? I found them at one store for $1089.21 and at another for $1499.95" Her reply "I myself would buy it from the cheaper store."
Your question was answered.

Response from Julia D.

Thank you for contacting Nikon.

It was my pleasure in assisting you today. Unfortunately we are not able to tell with a serial number if a camera is Grey market or not. It can only be doe by our service centers and by then it is too late if it is because they will not be able to work on it.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reply to this email or contact us back at 1-800-645-6687. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9am-8pm EST.

Have a great day!

The biggest problem with grey market now is that Nikon has stopped providing parts to what used to be "authorized" Nikon repair facilities. Any and all Nikon repairs need to be done through Nikon's service department, and they will not work on grey market items. While the former authorized repair facilities may be able to work on Nikon equipment for a while longer until they run out of parts, the reality is that it's going to be next to impossible to repair grey market items in the very near future.

Beware of deep discount stores for the following reasons. Many will sell you only the camera, after having removed the battery, charger and connecting cables from the box. If you want those, then the price goes up to the same or even more than everyone else is selling the camera for. Further, they are very often grey market. Lastly, customer "service" at these places is essentially non-existent.

Nikon sets suggested pricing, and anyone who is an authorized Nikon dealer will be selling at these prices. I'd stick with places like Adorama, B&H, Roberts Camera, or Mike's Camera. You'll get the "real deal" from these guys, and the customer service will generally be quite good.

Hope that helps. :)

Just an added observation. It's pretty lousy of Nikon not to offer parts for their camera's. I suppose this has been mentioned elsewhere but I guess this is why camera shops aren't offering extended warranties.

Being price conscience myself I bought a D750 used. I did a lot of research and comparison and for the money, I decided the D750 would work fine. Being still a good bit of money and not wanting any chances of any hassles, I didn't buy the real cheap used eBay offerings. I found a used D750 on Roberts with 3000 clicks (Box, strap, battery, charger and all) for less than half of retail. With a 6 month warranty.

As noted you can most likely buy grey market and be fine. I might even consider that the odds are high that if something did go wrong you could still find someone to repair the camera for less than the $400-$500 you save by going grey market (at least for awhile). But it would be more of a hassle to find that place.

Whichever you decide I would suggest that saving $500 is something to consider. Saving $100 by buying from a place or person with no reputation behind them is not.

But being you posted this a few days ago you may have already bought. LOL

I found Milford Photo in Connecticut. Authorized Nikon Dealer. One of the men in the photo club I belong to suggested them. Called talked with the owner a while he offered me a display model that was "only out on display around a month, never had a lens or battery in/on it" , his words. Got warranty card and all the factory goodies for $1250.00 shipped to me. Tracking says it'll be here Tuesday.

That sounds great! The D750 is an amazing camera that should serve you well for years to come. :)

Thanks Cindy. I sure hope I been doing everything but collecting soda bottles to pay for it. Really wanted the 810 but can't see spending the extra $1000.

You will love it. I don't know anybody who didn't like that camera. I considered it when I was upgrading but decided to stay with a crop camera.
