Favorite Len's

I am going to get a gift for my wife who shoots a D850. I can't afford a big
telephoto like a 500 or 600mm, but would love to have some suggestions from photographers here on what would make a nice gift under 2000.00. I am not a photographer.

She shoots Landscapes, Birds and other Wildlife, Waterfalls and Portraits.

Thank you!

She does have a Tamron 150-600 and the next stop up from there looks like a 600mm at 8k plus and I am not ready to go there!

Thank you very much though!

What other lenses does she have, floridafan? For portraiture, 85mm is always good. The f/1.8 isn't all that expensive although there is also an 85mm f/1.4 that is rated very well. Or a macro lens such as the 105mm f/2.8 would also double as a portrait lens. The 70-200mm f/2.8 (even the Tamron version) would fit your bill. The 16-35mm f/4 would work well for landscapes. But it depends on what she already has.

Which Prime Len's? That is sort of what I was thinking. She has the 50 the 85 and 135.... Mostly for Portraiture. I think one day I will get the nice Nikon Fisheye.

I was thinking that the 80-400 might cover that. I do have an old 80-200 which is heavy and she never uses.... The 80-400 and 28-300 are her favorite lens's now.

Don't get a Nikon fisheye, worst purchase I ever made. (Much too much $$$ for the few times I used it.) If you want the novelty of a fisheye get one of the Chinese manual lenses. 90% as good and much less expensive for something that sits on the shelf.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 probably isn't that different in weight than your 80-200mm. What about the 70-200mm f/4 VR? It's lighter yet amazingly sharp.

This was one of my all time favorites. Nice size, internal focus/zoom and great IQ

One of my favs, too! This one, the 300mm PF, and the 24-120mm are the three lenses I use the most since I am limited to not using anything too heavy. I also have the 16mm fisheye that @florida fan mentioned. It's a fun lens for sure but unfortunately not one I use as much as I anticipated.

She may like a 70-200 2.8. My wife's Tamron 70-200 G2 is super sharp. I recently got the Sigma version and it is very good but heavier than others. The 24-120 F/4 is a great all around lens and not too pricey.

300 F4 PF.
I don't have it, have never used it but I have heard a bunch of chatter about how nice and light it is carrying around instead of a big lens. Its the size of her 24-70 but able to get more reach, plus can have a much larger reach if used with teleconverters or a dx body.

The fisheye is fun, but +1 for getting a manual focus and saving a ton of money. I just snagged a Rokinon 8mm f3.5 with the removable petal lens hood for $200. Its 180 degree corner to corner on DX and a circle on FX, so useful on both formats. Its like having 2 lenses in one!

The 16mm full frame fisheye is listed on BH for right at 1000

or there is an open box on the site right now for 699. Pretty good deal.

Fisheye's can be a lot of fun, depending on the perspective you want to abuse ;)

Flirtatious Monkey.jpgThank you everyone for all your thoughts! I pulled the trigger on the Tamron 150-600 and the Nikon 24-70, replacing her older 35-70. I actually ordered them when I began this post but had not received them in the mail yet!
I think the next lens will be a 35mm, then begin saving for that 800mm. She shot with the Tamron 150-600 and likes it a lot. Today we found a Troop of monkeys on the Silver River in Ocala and got some nice shots.
