    EXIF question from a Newbie.

    Hi,

I see in the "Weekly Photo Challenges" and "Monthly Photo Assignments" forums that one is asked to include EXIF data with each shot. I gather from responses I've seen that EXIF is the list of settings used to make the photograph, along with what equipment. Can anyone tell me where I can find this data? I format my card after each session, so all my pictures are stored my computer (in JPEG). I'll assume none of that data was transferred when I imported them...? If my assumption is correct, is there a way to do so in the future via either camera settings or computer settings? I'd like to broaden my experience by forcing myself to enter some of these challenges, so I do want to follow the rules.

    Thanks so much!

BTW, is Nikonites still holding photo contests? I see the dedicated forum with that title has not been active for almost a year now.

We do a weekly photo challenge and a monthly assignment for contests here at Nikonites.
Your data should show up here when you post a picture. Post a picture and if data does not show up ask for help.

The photo contest thread you're looking at is not our contests, but outside Nikonites.

As nikonpup mentioned, we do monthly and weekly assignments.

You may also want to start your own 365 to see how you improve. You can do that here - https://nikonites.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=55

EXIF data is contained within the image file itself and should persist through importing. There are some applications that strip out EXIF data to conserve space but in all likelihood the EXIF data for your old photos is intact, you just need to find it. To read the data you need a software application that can show you the information, of which there are many. There are online viewers, single-purpose apps that do nothing but show EXIF data and digital image viewers that will display EXIF data. I use a photo viewer called Irfanview for this, for example. That's not a recommendation, really, it's just one example. Another really good option, assuming your on a Windows-based computer, is FastStone Viewer. You can find a whole list of options on this page and take your pick.

EXIF should display on your post after you have refreshed the page. Some post processing programs will strip it unless you turn something on.
