Excellent information! I had no idea. Now I need to dig out my refurbished D7100 and check.

"Unconfirmed way......". So, why publish it if it isn't confirmed to be true?

A few commentors have what they state is supposed to be refurbished equipement that do no thave those marks. I dunno, it just left me with a bunch of questions. Seems to me Nikon would use something more official to mark refurbished equipment.

Can you call Nikon and have them verify if a piece of equipment if refurbished based on the serial number? Inquiring minds want to know. It is good information for those who would be purchasing refurbished equipment. Just needs verification.

My D7100 that I purchased directly from Nikon as a refurbished body DOES have the marks on both sides of the serial number. None of the used Nikon lenses that I've purchased from camera stores are marked though.

My 7200 is marked that way and is refurbished. The 700 is not and has no marks. To me it was interesting for buying used stuff.

Two lenses and two bodies for me. All bought as refurbs and all marked with the dots. Everything else Nikon I have was bought new or used and has no dots.

I’d be loath to buy used other than through a well known dealer or direct from the manufacturer. I’d think refurbished would be almost as new as far as internals go.
If I bought used, if I then found it was refurbished I’m not sure how I’d feel. Interesting.
