beginner needs help

hello, first post here.
i just recently was given a Nikon D7100 with a 18-70mm lens
i have read as much as i can on cameras, im having a problem. it will only shoot in 'manual' but not auto. and also whenever i want to shoot inside i can see clear on my screen but he pictures come out super dark, even with the flash. any help please and thank you.

Welcome to the forum, afraid we need more information from you, are you using the viewfinder or the rear screen, what have you got the left hand dial set to for a start.

Also, agree with Mike. We need more information. Also check that both your camera and lens are set to auto-focus. Also, since you were given the camera, perform a full factory reset to make sure all the settings are set to default. Check you manual for procedure (you can also download the manual from Nikon).

For the super dark pictures, what were the settings? Do you know how to change the aperture and the shutter speed? Do you know how to change the ISO?

Your camera might not shoot in Auto because it cannot lock focus in some dark scenes.

There are truly dozens of reasons you might be having these problems, so we will have to walk through them one or two steps at a time.

For now, let us know if you can change your aperture and shutter speed, and what the settings were for the dark pictures.

I may be way off here, but let's check some simple things: is the rotating dial at the top left of your camera set to "Auto" or "P"? Next, press the button at the top right of your camera that says "+/-", then rotate the dial at the top rear while keeping that button pressed until it says "0". These settings should give you reasonably exposed pictures. Do they work?

There could be several reasons for why you're D7100 is acting up.

Since the camera was in the hands of a previous owner doing a full reset back to the factory settings might be a good place to start. This two-minute video will walk you through how to do that.

You might also want to read up on your new camera starting with the D7100 User Manual you can download here from the Nikon website.
