Should I replace Nikon 24 120 f/4 VR

I got the lens as kit lens which I have been using for last two and half years. As you all are aware that this is a good lens but not excellent to create crispy sharp, high contrast and high colour rendition.

Should I move for sets of prime lenses like 35mm, 24mm, 50mm and 80mm slowly or a 24 70 f/2.8? First option is phased approach, but second one is lumpsum.

My photography interest is basically historical architecture, landscape, travel and family. For nature I use 105 macro and 80 400 g VR lens. I am happy with these lenses. I am enthusiast but actively participate in competition.

Please suggest which is the optimum approach from three aspects- cash flow, convenience and picture quality.

24-70 2.8 seems like a good option. How about an even wider lens? Or the Holy Trinity lenses. 70-200 is cats meow.

How do you like your 80-400?

Which camera(s) do you use?

The 24-120 is a fine lens. I used it for a while on my D7100 before I got my D750 The only problem I found with it was that it was not wide enough. Do you fine tune your lenses?

I like my 80 400, it takes wonderful photograph in good lighting condition. I use d750.

Read your manual, it fully describes fine tuning. I though you were going to buy the 100 anniversary lens set?

Majority suggested not to go for that option. I agreed with all of them, so thinking for improvement in photography through other options.

Please advise what fine tune is required.

There are many different methods to Fine Tune Nikon lenses. This is an option on all the camera from The D7000 and up. It is in my opinion something that should be done on all lenses that you own. (It is something that you have to do on each lens that you use.) I personally use a software method on all my cameras. I find it easier and more accurate The program is https://www.reikanfocal.com/focal-pro.html

There are free methods available also. You can google Nikon Fine Tune to see the different options.

I own the three Nikon f/2.8 lenses, which are of course great. So I have choices, and I do use them around home. But they are heavy, and I use the 24-120 for routine one-lens travel and walk-around use, and it's great too. It's the only lens I take now, and I would not consider getting rid of it. However, the 24-120 is too long for that use on a DX body (needs 12 or 16 mm wide end), but it's great on FX.

Here are two, D800 with 24-120:

I agree, Wayne. Unless I'm doing serious work or need ultra wide or extended zoom, I'll use the 24-140.

I use the 24-120 on both my DF and also on the D500 where it becomes a 36-180mm equivalent so for me it still works as a street lens.

It is a super sharp lens and delivers great quality even wide open at f4 and the VR is superb, it is even better at f5.6.

I find it very fast and accurate to focus in all situations and my only gripe is the size and weight but the quality of image it delivers overcomes this.
