Why the dots?

Why do I get these two dots when taking photos of sunsets? I took them on my D7100 and put the camera in to scene mode sunset. I used a 55mm - 200mm kit lens. I took the shot from my car and had no other gear with me....should I have used a filter????

What do you think? I had cleaned my camera before venturing out and there was no muck on the lens etc.

sensor dust - clean the sensor or if your processing software allows cleaning during processing. You may try the senor cleaning in your cameras menu. Spots usually show up in the sky or other bright areas.

I have cleaned the image sensor and set it to clean on start up in future....cheers everyone.

I have mine set to clean sensor on start up and shut down but sometimes annoying dust spots get on the sensor and then I have to bring out the Eyelead gel stick to get rid of them :D

The camera's sensor clean function sometimes does not remove some stubborn dust particles. Camera sensors produce a lot of static and some dust seems to stick to it.

There are quite a few sensor cleaning videos on YouTube that teach how to do the procedure yourself. If you feel unconfident, you can bring your camera to a good camera shop. Quite a few of them offer this service for a fee.

You can also retouch in most post processing software.

We've all been there.

I just posted this in another thread. It is a thorough tutorial on wet cleaning a sensor. Some sticky stuff is really difficult to clean off. I've had some of that sticky stuff stuck on my sensor, and it doesn't always come off the first time I use a wet wand. So I wind up going through 2 or 3 wet wands in one sitting when it's like that.

Cindy, You're going to have to wipe the peanut butter and jelly off of your hands before you change lenses. ;)

Sensor cleaning may require more than just using the on-camera 'shake-the-daylights-out-of-the-sensor' option.

Cleaning a sensor can involve actually sticking various tools into the camera using the Mirror Up for Cleaning function.
