Battery/Battery Grip Nikon d800

Hi folks, ,I need help!!

Got a Vertax D12 grip for my Nikon D800 today. Camera worked brilliantly all day - before I put the grip on.

Once it was on, (as per instructions), it would not turn the camera on or work at all. At one point when I was screwing in the base, the green light popped on, but then stopped. I tried to get it to work with the battery ONLY in the grip, with a battery in both the grip and the camera (both good batteries from Nikon) and it didn't work.

So, I figured the grip was a bust...yeah, should never have let my family buy me one for Christmas. Anyway...I put the battery back in my camera and went to turn it on and it's DEAD!!! I'm SO upset.

Please, can anyone help me figure out what to do? I tried 2 different batteries (charged) that work in my D7000, but my D800 doesn't respond whatsoever.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!

I'm not familiar with the Vertax grip, but I have used Nikon OEM grips on the D7100 and D810. There shouldn't be much to do other than screwing them into the base in order for them to work. Seeing the green "writing" LED illuminate is common, so I don't think that is an indicator of the problem itself. I expect to see that LED go on then off again when adding/removing the grip, just like inserting/removing a memory card.

Did you have the camera body off when adding the grip? I would probably recommend leaving the body with no battery installed for 30 minutes or so, and then see what happens when a battery is re-inserted with the grip removed. It's possible something got shorted in the body when testing originally, particularly if the body was switched on while testing, so first thing is to verify the body by itself without the grip.

Yes, I attached the grip while the camera was off. I first tried it with no camera in the body, then with. Nothing happened either time. As soon as I took the grip off (also while turned off), I tried just my camera to no avail. It was dead. Switched batteries around etc. but nothing happened. The camera won't turn on.

I finally managed to get the grip working for like 20 seconds (as I screwed it on, the green light came on before it was fully attached...so I'm thinking it's not connecting properly). Anyway, I went to the menu and was sure that I had set it to use the camera battery first, and yet it seemed not to recognize that there was even a battery in it. Look at the cell photos so you can see what I mean. The photo where it shows the battery in the grip, also had a photo in the camera, yet it wasn't showing up that there was one there. Argh, so frustrating!

So now my grip doesn't work, AND my camera is completely dead when trying to use just the battery in the camera. HELP!
