It isn't a prime lens and I think the F stop range you mentioned is likely correct.
This is a zoom, as a prime would only have one set focal length. I hope this helps.:)

Bill, I love the lens as it shoots very sharp pics. I was reading an article about finding your cameras sweet spot and they recommended you count the number of F-stops for the lens and then find the middle of that group and it might be the sweet spot. I am fairly new to photography and decided I will learn focus as, I see it, a picture not focused is ready to trash. I want my pics to be sharp and crisp. Paul
