why is this happening?

Hi, I'm having a problem with this camera indoors. The light is on in the room but the picture is coming out dark esp in S mode, P mode is not as dark but a bit orange/blurry. My minimum shutter speed is set to 1/200. With the flash on the pic is normal, is this a flaw with camera? Flash? Lighting?

thanks,

ps haven't tried it outside yet

If the top one is with flash on and the bottom one is flash off (both having the same settings) then that looks pretty normal. Inside with a single light at 1/200 f5.6 and ISO1600 it's going to come out underexposed. I just tried with your settings no flash and just about got the same thing.

Which camera is it? At first I thought your exposure compensation might have been set to under expose but that looks to be off.

For what it's worth, this was my pic at those settings. Not as dark but that could be because of my lighting vs. yours.

It's a D5000, I was using the 18-55 @ 55mm, taken at the same spot etc, thanks. Would increasing the iso help? Then I might have noise issues. Thanks

yeah, the top one is with flash. On board flash

you dont have enough ambient light. 1600iso is not enough. 5.6 is too closed and 1/200 is not enough time to let in enough light. add all three and you dont have enough to catch ambient exposure.

youd have to bump at least to iso 8000 to see reasonable light. and even then not enough because the aperture is too closed and shutter too fast.

tripod?

hey, your a linux guy too ;), in response to papast. Thanks rocketman122. So better off just using the flash indoors for most occasions then?

I just went outside, and tried 3 modes and all the pics came out fine/normal P, S, A so I think it boils down to a lighting issue. And I didn't change any settings. Sorry I deleted them

thanks,

If ur shooting still life then a tripod is fine and expose to lower numbers with the shutter. but if youre shooting people. minimum id go is 1/125, better is 1/160. aperture is too close but thats youre limit with that lens. flash bounced up with card out with a lowish ceiling works well.

I use a flash indoors unless there is a lot of light from outside coming in! My favorite setup for inside is my sb-800 on my full frame Nikon's! But a good flash makes a world of difference when shooting inside or even outside to combat harsh lighting to remove the shadows sometimes! :)
Even the built in flash can work pretty well at times! But a good shoe flash is much better! :)

PS. I'm also using Linux on my laptop! Lol :)

Thanks Bill16, what would be a good basic flash for me to start with? Are they expensive? And the external your talking about would make the second picture look like the first? Or almost. An external flash is a good idea to work with what I have at the moment.

Yeah, I've been playing around with linux for years. I change flavours all the time. I like Mint the most, but that might be a newbie distro to you ;)

A flash isn't a hurry item! Your built-in flash will get you by! Then they have a few brands of flashes that others here likes very well! Nikon is the most expensive but works the best over all. But yongnou flashes are much much cheaper and others here really love them! :) best bet would be to wait until you have more knowledge of what you want to use the flash for! :)

My choice of flash is the Nikon sb-800, but you might prefer a different flash as you learn what you like best! :)

A great flash that would work for your camera would be the Yongnuo 568EX. Rather inexpensive and an awesome flash. Comparable to the much pricier Nikon SB-700.

thanks for the link, I don't mean to be lazy does yongnuo sell one for a bit less? If I get a cheaper one will it be less effective. I'm talking $99.99 and under. I ask because you might know offhand. If not I will do the homework

"ex fedora user" Linux :)

I see a YN 560 III, $90 and version IV for $99

i saw external flash units in target for $60, dont know how good they are, but one thing you will learn on here is to try and buy the best first time.

I think this is another ballpark because, some say ttl and it might get complicated. Is ttl what I should be looking for?

As Bill16 suggested, it's not a hurry thing. But certainly something to think about. I will hold off on one for now

thx,

you have a huge variety of excellent inexpensive flashes you can choose from. personally I own 3 nikon flashes Ive bought over the years but the last two years I only use 3rd party flashes for weddings and I couldnt be happier. theyre built extremely well, perform very well and for the price they are basically disposable if they fall and break from a light stand. mine fell over 3 times as of now and still working. I dont think a day will come along and ill be purchasing a flash with what 3rd party offer for the price.

flashes id recommend you look at
yongnuo 565 as fish noted
Review of the Yongnuo YN565EX Speedlight

yongnuo 568 ive had both the 565 and 568. sold one gave away another. good flashes I gave the 565 to my ladies daughter. it has known issues with the 622n trigger of theirs. the 568 is good but I didnt need a ttl flash.
