Newbie question for Nikon D7200 but it's probably just a 'camera focus' question

I'm really sorry if this has already been asked but I can't find it on the forums. I've upgraded from my little D60 to D7200 which is a FAB camera but I find sometimes it wont take the picture even though, to me, it looks in focus. This tends to happen on both macro and portrait settings (yep, I like using the settings but am slowly getting into the Aperture mode). I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and find I can flip to manual focus and take the picture but would really like to know what, if anything, I'm doing wrong for learning purposes.

Any ideas?

Most likely your camera is set up not to take a shot until it has obtained a focus-lock. Even though things appear in focus to you, the camera may not agree and refuse to take the shot. You can over-ride this setting easily however. Press the menu button and go into the Pencil icon (CUSTOM SETTING menu) and go into the "A" menus. There you'll find settings for "Autofocus" and, more specifically, "Priorty". Release Priority allows you to take a shot without having achieved focus-lock, Focus Priority prevents the shutter from activating until there's a focus lock.

Edit: I guess I should add the obvious caveat that if you set your camera to use Release Priority you do increase your odds of getting more out-of-focus shots.
