looking for a raw file reader only

Hi I'm thinking of shooting in Raw down the road. I use lightroom but I wanted something that would allow me to go through what I wanted to keep or not keep. A small program pref. free. I know lightroom does it but I just wanted to upload the files go through what I want to pp and what I don't want. Instead of going to lightroom first. Does anyone know or use such a raw preview program.. I heard that windows has a package of codecs to download but it won't work on mine because I jumped on the windows 10 eval version.

Thanks,

thanks so far. What I mean is I need a light weight prog for going through the pics I took. Lightroom won't give me the whole screen to scan though the pics. I don't want to develop right away. I want to go through my pics first. I don't open light room unless I want to develop. Windows has the camera codec's package up to win 7.1

Mike is Ifran, a viewer or a developing program as well. Because I have lightroom, the same for Nikon View Nx, is it just a viewer. I don't need more than one program to develop just a viewer

is it part of the camera codec package or an upgrade/patch. I can't install the codec package because it doesn't support my version of windows it didn't come out yet. that looks promising, a stand alone and free. thanks, I won't install it yet. I don't have any raw files lol. But that can be easily fixed. It says windows 7.1 as well. Win 8.1 is close though. Do I need anything else installed for this to work? Like that "Nikon view thingy Mike mentioned

is it just a viewer or a full fledged progam to edit as well. The reason I asked is, i got my cam second hand with no nikon disk that comes with a new cam. I'll have a look at it. The thing with the Nikon codec program is, down the road if I get another cam which isn't a Nikon I'll need another view. Does faststone have a stand alone viewer?

I didn't want to get 2-3 programs to edit photos that's why I asked about a viewer. And I thought other people might be using some little hiddent program that is a "secret"

thanks,

View NX is just a viewer these days, if you want to edit, it'll open Capture if you have it installed. You can download them for free at Nikon.

When you no longer need them, you only have to hit uninstall.

The codec are handy even when they only show the unedited NEF. If you maximize the folder and select a NEF, at the bottom of the folder you get most relevant EXIF info.

I installed a little program called free photo viewer from cnet downloads. Exifsoftware.com. Small and simple, I'll give it a try first then try the nx viewer thingy then nikon codec thingy. I think I have enough to go on now. And if all else fails. ADOBE LIGHTROOM ;) in surveyor mode.

thx,

I don't understand. The Nikon Codex installs in Windows, and lets Explorer, open/view NEF files like any other file... Same with the Apple's Finder...
