Nikon lens repair New York City - Photo Tech

Hi all, I have a 17-35 f/2.8 AF-S lens that sometimes squeaks when focusing. I think it just needs to be cleaned and lubricated. I noticed that the only authorized repair canter in NYC is a place called Photo Tech on 36th St. I have never used them. Has anybody had any experiences with this place? Also, it seems that Nikon has stopped selling parts to any non-authorized repair centers. There used to be more places in Manhattan to get a Nikon repaired. Does anybody use any other places in Manhattan? I know that Adorama advertises repairs but they charge for an estimate whereas the Nikon repair center in Melville NY does not. I just don't know if I want to ship the lens since it could get damaged or lost in shipping. Thanks

There's this new fangled stuff called insurance. You buy it when you ship stuff to insure against loss or damage...;)

Thanks for the snarky reply. There's also something called not getting your lens broken, which is free and comes with peace of mind at no extra cost. Have you ever tried to make an insurance claim with a carrier? I have not heard any happy stories about it.

And yet, there you sit, with a lens you're not happy with, looking for a place to walk around and get it fixed... and afraid to send it to the folks that can fix it. How far is Melville NY from where you are??? Catch a ride and hand deliver it to Nikon.

if you use enough bubble wrap and stabilize it in a box, which means wrapping the lens itself then in the box using 4 "taped" balls of bubble wrap (the smallest bubbles) in the 4 corners, you could throw it from the 2nd floor ithout an issue. you can also double box it. put it in a shoe box then use their ups boxes to box that. double suspended padding. which means padding to lesn. 4 corners padding, then box that in another box with 4 bubble wrapped balls in corners to hold it in air. so stop whining ;)

funny you mentioned the 17-35 AFS. friday I shot a wedding with my friend who has this lens and his is "chirping" also.

I think you should contact nikon cause it might even be a waste to send it for repair as I dont think they dont repair first gen SWM.

I had my 28-70 repaired.

very happy with the repair. have it for a year+ now and very happy.

It's much easier for me to take it to the authorized repair shop in Manhattan than it would be to send it. I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with the place. I did read a post from someone who sent his camera to Nikon in Melville, and though the carrier said that his package was "left at reception" Nikon claimed that they didn't have it. So, now he is stuck with a carrier saying that they delivered the package, Nikon saying that they didn't get it, and no camera.

p.s. There was a time when THE guy to go to for Nikon Repairs in NYC was Marty Forscher, but he passed away. Later came Ken Hansen, but last I heard, he packed up and moved to Florida. Then came Nippon Photo but according to Yelp they are closed, and they don't seem to have a web site any more. So, it may seem strange to some people for me to be asking these questions, but it seems like all of the places that the pros used to go to are gone.

According to google maps, it less tan an hour drive from Brooklyn (where the OPs profile says he is) to Melville. It it were me, and I live that close to Melville, I'd get in the car and hand carry my lens to Nikon
