Lens help - Perspective

Ok so just got my D610 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. I can't put it down. Everyday I'm still learning something new. Just got a dope raise and bonus at work last week and must invest in another lens haha. I have 1 lens right now I bought with the body which is the 24-85mm. Hoping I can turn to some fellow photographers and gather some perspective. Into the car scene and love 'trying' to shoot automotive for the most part. I have a few in mind, but don't know what to do. Thinking of fixed 50mm like 1.4, a telephoto maybe around 300mm or maybe a slight wide angle… Honestly, I don't know. Please share your thoughts. Thank you!

You might peruse the Automotive Forum and check the EXIF on each shot, might give you an idea or two. There's a few car shooters that might pop in here. @carguy is one that comes to mind.

I quite like wide angle for cars. I LIKE the distortion ( a lot of people don't) when you shoot from a few inches away.

Of the shots you posted I think the last 2 are the best :D esp the third one

Thanks for the heads up Eyelight.

Kevin - looks like some nice shots out of the gate. You can do a lot with the 24-85 you have now. I'd look for something 'faster' (f2.8 or 1.8) to narrow the depth of field for some shots. Maybe sell that for a 24-70mm f2.8? Consider a 70-200 f2.8 for nice compression on full car shots? (Sigma $1K, Tamron $1,500, Nikon $2,400)

I've used a 50mm 1.8G for some shots (flickr album here), 1.4 is pretty fast and I don't need that much personally, your individual taste may vary :)

I take all kinds of car images, up close detail shots to full car shots. You can use any lens to shoot cars really depending on what your end result is.

Checkout some work from the following shooters for some ideas;

I'd suggest either a 70-200mm f/2.8 or a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 simply because they're two extremely flexible lenses I don't think any photographer should be without. Coupled with the existing 24-85mm I think you'd be set, personally, and with only three lenses. At least until you get into something demanding of specialized focal lengths like wildlife or macro photography.
