Hi Nikonites,
I am relatively new to photography and I recently purchased a brand new Nikon D5300 and it seems to be having a peculiar issue. The live view mode doesnt seem to change the picture quality when i adjust the iso, aperture and shutter speed etc., can anybody please help me here? I am really worried whether I have to change the camera or get/wait for a firmware upgrade?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome...

Do you mean movie mode, or still photo mode in Live View? What camera mode, A, S, P, M?

Movie mode can be rather different.

I have the 5300 but I don't use live View often. Saying that, I don't see the live view image change when changing ISO, f-stop, etc either. I don't think you will see it change until after shooting the picture where you will then see the results. I may be missing something in your post. The values for the settings do change in the information bars, however. Let us know exactly what you are doing and expecting.

Hi Wayne,
its in the still mode...all A, P, M & S modes. I tried changing the movie manual mode setting (changed to ON) and the live view did work in still mode but its very very poor in the dark and i can change only the shutter speed and iso but not aperture in manual mode live view. Is it supposed to be this way?

Hi Walt,
Judging by your answer I guess it is supposed to be this way.

Also, let me add something else. The shutter speed will not be reflected in the view, so that is probably the main reason you will not see picture quality change (darker, lighter, etc) in live view. This is all just an assumption. Ha!

I think so. I did not find a way to change the f-stop, etc in Manual - Live View either. Shutter speed and ISO only.

Maybe that is why I shoot with the viewfinder. Ha!

You can change those values - which will affect the photo - but the live view doesn't show the change until the picture is taken and live view is re-initialized. I never understood why, but that's how it is on my d5200 anyway.

For example...
Start live view
Set EV -2 but nothing changes on screen.
Snap a picture.
Picture comes out 2 stops too dark
Live view comes back 2 stops too dark
Etc.

Today, I found how to change the f-Stop setting in Live View. Push the +/- button (exposure compensation button) next to the shutter release button and then rotate the thumb wheel. I watched the f-stop setting change after showing the settings using the i button for information on the live view. (I read the manual for Manual shooting.) Ha! I haven't been able to change the f-stop while movie mode is ON but My fix for this was to turn off movie mode ad then change the f-stop to where you want it then switch it back on.
