Focal length for star trails?

Just out of curiosity, do you guys shoot your star trails at any particular focal length? Or do you just base your focal length on your composition and what you want in the frame? My last attempt was at 18mm on my kit lens, but im wondering if maybe that'd too wide...

If you have a subject around which you want to shoot a star trail, then it would make sense to use variable focal length.
But as a process, it is always advisable to use your widest lens at the widest focal length to maximize your view of the sky in one shot..

Widest lens and keep in mind that the stars closest to the north star will move much less than the stars farther from the north star. So if you're looking to capture long trails, shoot towards the south east or south west
