Word Of Mouth Marketing

Hello.
I've skimmed through the last two years posts and found nothing related to the topic. Do you (and How) deliberately manage the word of mouth marketing in your photography business? There're some stuff on the Internet but it'd be interesting to share the experiences here.

You can't control what people say about you. But you CAN control WHY they say what they say about you.

Do crappy work, and people will say crappy things about you. Do good work, and they will say good things about you.

Years ago, the standard was: If you did good work, a person will refer you to one other person. Do bad work, and they'll tell 7 others. With the internet today, that 1:7 ratio has probably change to 1:15 or 1:25 or even 1:50.

sparky,
your words're true but there's nothing about working for one's clients network. It's good to work well and get kind comments. Probably, photographers have their own useful methods to increase a flow of positive feedback. For example, I read an interesting tool: you can make a slideshow of your resulting pictures in order to make easier and funnier for the client to share it on a social platform. Somebody else is able even to repost it - also easy.

I'd be glad If the forum members will describe their ways to attract clients without payed advertisment.

Word of mouth works directly with how well of a network YOU have. I feel that 90% of us in this business lack this crucial tool or we wouldn't be typing here discussing it instead of being flooded with work.
@480sparky, being good and doing good quality work is the unspoken foundation of any professional business, so if someone's work isn't even up to par, everything else doesn't matter. Kind of why I'm still steering away from trying weddings - abysmal pay in the beginning for the same level and expectation of work and it would only take 1 hiccup to drown in the ocean of others.

So if you lack a network, make some socialite friends who have a ridiculous network and then shoot them at social functions so they can show off your work to their network. That or hire a marketer/brand PR to push you out to your market. I'm honestly about to invest into that direction because it's my weakest link in a way.

SkvLTD,
You helped me to crystallize what I am thinking about. I understood that it'd be useful to get recommendations from about 30 principals where I work. They serve in the field of policy and can be like keys to a lot of people for me. If I correctly construct promotion shooting for them, and they give me a big amount of good feedback, it will be a springboard for freelance work. I have to plan it carefully.

Pretty much. And I need to hop on hiring marketing myself.

One thing I have done is offer clients a discount on their next photo session if they pass some cards of mine around to their friends. It has worked pretty well so far.
