Hi guys please delete if this is in the wrong thread. I would like some advice about landscape / travel photography and making some money out of it. I was wandering if you guys have got any advice where I start to get my photos seen. I would ideally like to do travel photography which involves landscapes but I'm not sure where I would start do I approach magazines or is there a site where I put them?? I no there are stock sites like getty which I am going to put my photos on if they get accepted. Is there any other ways of getting my photos noticed. Many thanks Ross

Welcome to Nikonites, I hope you find what you are looking for in a sharing community.

To my knowledge, getting images published is a long process. Unless you are already famous or known to agencies, it could be very difficult to get yourself picked out of the millions of landscapes photos taken every single day the sun shines... So if you are thinking of leaving your job to live of photography, think again.

A lot of times, photographers are asked to go to places to photograph special landscapes, but they do it with a contract in hand (at least those who make good money). Capturing images and trying to sell them afterward is another game altogether. It's all a question of contacts and hard promotion of yourself and your work.

I wish you good luck in your quest, but I think it might take time.

Enjoy your Nikon.

You could start with flickr and 500px. And facebook. The more you get your photos out these, the better. Forget Getty or any of those sites unless you're awesome and only need pennies on the dollar for your work.

First, you are trying to get into a VERY saturated market that has VERY VERY low demand, that alone is extremely difficult at best. However, as you said you are young... learn your craft, I have looked at your 500px images, you have a lot of room for improvement.

Learn the basics of photography and understand your equipment and post processing.

Learn the 12 Elements of Merit of an Image.
12 Elements of a Merit Image | PPA

Once you fully understand the technical side of the rules - you need to learn how to break them!

View books and online portfolios of successful landscape artists and examine what they are doing.

Figure out what you can do to be "different". People are not going to "see" you if your art is the same as millions of others.
Style, subject - something... you have to find a way to stand out.

Travel to places that most people can't go to or get to.

Start going to and entering local showings and contests, learn form the critiques.

Print and frame prints, canvas prints and self-publish a couple of books. Give or hang them in local business, model homes, furniture stores and get feedback form the owners. Find local tourist traps and ask them to hang your work and sell your books - just to see if people are interested in what your doing. Again, you have to be different.

Also setup a small booth and sell them at local craft shows and events. While you'll not likely make a living this way, it gets you in the face of the public, and trust me they will tell you what they like and don't like. The one thing a lot of photographers forget is that buyers/editors buy what "they" like - and a lot of times that might not be what you like.

If you live in a small town, do this all in a larger city.

Now that you have been doing this for a couple of years, come back and then ask the question "How to I get my photos in magazines?"
